The original intention of Damfoolperfume in creating perfumes is to always maintain a passionate curiosity about scents. We firmly believe that fragrances can transcend time and space, connecting humanity and history, and touching the most profound emotions within us. Damfoolperfume aspires to bring the most evocative art of Chinese scents.
Studio Vision:
We hope to enable the world to recognize the beauty of Chinese independent perfumes from a brand-new perspective through our perfume creations. We explore the possibilities of scents and constantly create more astonishing olfactory experiences. We dig out unique scents from China and even the world. Damfoolperfume Olfactory Art Studio tirelessly explores the boundaries of perfume ingredients and bravely develops unknown mysterious Chinese spices.
About the Name: Why “Damfool Perfume”
There is an old saying in China, “Great wisdom seems like foolishness,” and there is another part that follows: “Great foolishness seems like a Buddha.” Here, the Buddha refers to Maitreya Buddha, also known as the Future Buddha, with a broad and simple appearance that I greatly admire. I firmly believe that perfume is an art of imagination, and maintaining curiosity is the key to continuous progress. I hope to be like a simpleton, always approaching all scents with a humble and inquisitive heart. Therefore, my perfume brand is called “Damfool Perfume.”
Perfumer’s Journey:
Waveman Kong, a.k.a big Buddha. a native of Macau with roots in Minnan, began self-studying perfumery in 2021. On this small, multicultural island of Macau, he constantly explores the profound Minnan cultural heritage within himself. Passionate about fragrances, he skillfully crafts scents that best reflect the local humanistic atmosphere. His background as an independent documentary filmmaker and decades of experience as a dancer have added captivating narrative and rhythm to his creations.
The Damfool Perfume:
This is a universe of perfumes. It is a fictional world set in the era of the Republic of China. On this map, each season’s work represents a story that takes place in a certain location. The scent of The Fragrance of the Giant Buddha is based on folk customs and local characteristics, attempting to combine various unique scents to create a retro olfactory scene that can be entered through the sense of smell.
S1-The Two Trees
Season 1 of the works focuses on the memories of living in Guangdong, drawing inspiration from Guangdong herbal tea and Guangdong sweet soup, and based on the Chypre fragrance note elements, these two creations were made.
S2-The Hometown
The second season of the work unfolds from an experience of returning to the hometown in Fujian. It starts from the old yellow ox at the village entrance, to the ancestral house, to the distinctive ancestral worship ceremony, and then to the river where the childhood was spent playing. It presents a series of emotionally charged olfactory scenes through the retro food and the rural animal scents.
S3-The Regretful Circus
The third season is a fantasy based on the small port city of Macau, imagining a story taking place in a small town where three major rivers converge and docks gather. The three works respectively employ three uncommon olfactory elements to depict three characters wrapped in tragic hues, telling their allegorical tales.

This is an olfactory experimental project by Damfool Perfume. We have explored many medicinal materials recorded in ancient books, processing and transforming them to create surprising new fragrance ingredients.

Yak fragrance: From Tibetan people, who collect dried yak dung and use it as fuel, for building materials, and even in ritual ceremonies. Yaks live in high-altitude regions, feeding only on plateau grasses and drinking melted snow from mountains. Therefore, dried yak dung is very pure, with few impurities and no unpleasant odor. We spent nearly a year, with three rounds of soaking, constant temperature extraction, followed by filtration and concentration, and then a month-long natural evaporation and aging process to obtain this fascinating material. It releases a pleasant grassy scent with a lactic fermented effervescent quality, showing beautiful transformations.

Porcupine fragrance: In ancient China, people collected naturally shed porcupine quills, roasted them and boiled them with tea, or carbonized them and soaked them in rice wine. Inspired by this, I soaked porcupine quills in rice wine, dried them, then extracted them into a tincture, placing the entire vessel under sunlight for six months of natural aging. The result is a surprisingly interesting scent.
Insect tea: In Guiyang, China, there is a mysterious tea-making process. Tea farmers place roasted tea leaves in a basket and leave it in tea forests. The aroma attracts insects that feed on the leaves. After some time, farmers collect the basket and gather the black granular substance inside, which is the insects’ droppings. After roasting, it emits an even stronger and more unique aroma.
Silkworm excrement fragrance: In 19th century Chinese towns, it was popular for children to raise silkworms. They feed only on mulberry leaves, making their byproducts very clean. These are also used in traditional Chinese medicine. We turned it into a tincture, removing residues and wax, then concentrating it under constant temperature to create a scent that sparks imagination — resembling wild kiwi.
❌❌ Earthworm fragrance: From an ancient historical formula. Dried earthworms are cleaned, stir-fried in a clay pot with rice wine to absorb aroma, then soaked in licorice tincture, air-dried, ground into powder, and extracted in tincture for six months. It results in a completely new animalic fragrance experience.
