This work was created during the traditional Qingming Festival. It describes what I saw and experienced upon returning to my hometown in the mountainous region to visit the tombs.

My ancestors had no names; instead, repetitive geometric symbols were used to represent their lineage. Their graves were submerged by the river more than a hundred years ago and sank to the bottom of a lake. Today, after the waters receded, they rest beneath a small hill, where humble, rough wildflowers grow.

Our tradition consists of clearing the weeds, burning colored paper money, and repainting the red characters on the tombstones.

I have brought with me all the scents of those memories.
